EXPLORING HUMAN NATURE

Through Fictional Golf Stories

Unlike the professional golfers who cooly compete on television for bloated prize money, real golfers—the weekend warriors—compete for the thrill of winning a few bucks and gloating about it in the clubhouse bar. The national media analyzes the performances and prospects of the pros ad nauseam, but no one seems to care about the rest of us. Yet one group does pay attention—the writers of golf fiction.

Introduction

hello i’m Brian Tarr

My father started teaching me the basics of the golf swing when I was a sophomore in high school in Baltimore, Maryland. Like so many teenagers, I loved everything about golf—the physical challenge of hitting the ball straight, high, and long; playing along with men and women in all stages of their life, and the natural environment. Later, golf history and fiction captured my attention and brought delight.

For most of my working career, I taught high school English in the public school system in Charlotte, NC. I also worked in the alumni and development offices of my alma mater, Davidson College. Along the way, I reported on golf tournaments for a local golf magazine and started writing golf fiction. Now that I’m retired, I have time to write more golf short stories and longer fiction.

about the book

tales of crooked creek golf club By Brian Tarr

These nine stories take place at a golf course outside of Baltimore, Maryland, in the 1960’s before the time of golf carts and modern equipment technology. The stories explore the relationship of the members and the caddies, as well as the choices and actions that each character makes. The reader will laugh, mourn, wince, and consider the moral and social issues involved.

“The Lost Putter”

When Chauncey McNickle II helps his mother clean out her house after his father’s death, he discovers an antique putter hidden in the attic. After being excited that the putter seems magical, he learns that such a putter carries responsibilities.
