About the Auhtor
hello i’m Brian Tarr
My father started teaching me the basics of the golf swing when I was a sophomore in high school in Baltimore, Maryland. Like so many teenagers, I loved everything about golf—the physical challenge of hitting the ball straight, high, and long; playing along with men and women in all stages of their life, and the natural environment. Later, golf history and fiction captured my attention and brought delight.
For most of my working career, I taught high school English in the public school system in Charlotte, NC. I also worked in the alumni and development offices of my alma mater, Davidson College. Along the way, I reported on golf tournaments for a local golf magazine and started writing golf fiction. Now that I’m retired, I have time to write more golf short stories and longer fiction.
My stories tend to present humorous views of golfers and the absurdity of the game itself. However, I also like to observe the deeper aspects that the so called “pastime” has on its adherents. Dedicated golfers know that their struggle to find some level of accomplishment carries the heavy weight of trying to prove something to their golfing friends and their own self. Golf is more than a “pastime.” Its rewards are great, and its occasional disappointments can hurt.
I’ve played golf at many of the famous courses in Scotland, Ireland, and England. These experiences in and around the places where the great game originated taught me the various aspects that make golf so charming: the terrains, the weather, the cultures, the accents, the attitudes, and the delights. Of course, American golf has it’s own quirks and purposes, and these are imbedded in my writing.
